The Lake District Geography

The Lake District is completely within Cumbria. However, it was historically divided between three English counties (Cumberland, Westmorland, and Lancashire). The three counties met at the Three Shire Stone on Wrynose Pass in the southern fells west of Ambleside.

All the land in England higher than 3,000 ft (914m) above sea level lies within the National Park. It also contains the deepest and largest natural lakes in England, Wast Water and Windermere respectively.

The Lake District Tourism

The Lake District has about 12 million visitors each year, mainly from the UK’s larger settlements, China, Japan, Spain, Germany and the US. Windermere Lake Steamers are Cumbria’s most popular charging tourist attraction with about 1.35 million paying customers each year, and the local economy is dependent upon tourists.

Cycling is very popular in the Lake District. Several towns have also become hubs for cycling holidays, such as Keswick and Ambleside. Mountain bikers use the trails constructed at Whinlatter Forest and Grizedale Forest.

Cultural tourism is becoming an increasingly important part of the wider tourist industry. The tradition of theatre is championed by venues such as Theatre by the Lake in Keswick. There are also many literature, film, mountaineering, jazz and arts festivals, such as the Kendal Mountain Festival and the Keswick Mountain Festival.

The Wettest Place In England

The Lake District’s geography makes it the wettest part of England. The UK Met Office reports an average annual rainfall of more than 2000mm.

Although The Lakes receives above average rainfall, there is a wide disparity between the amount of rainfall in the Western & Eastern lakes. Seathwaite, Borrowdale is the wettest inhabited place in England with an average of 3300mm.
